Ah, that first flush of young love. There’s nothing quite like it! When you first get into a new relationship it can feel as though everything will be rosy forever. You can’t keep your hands off one another, you relish every moment spent together and everything they say and do seems endearing and charming.

However, as the years go by, the sheen through which you see your beau can be dulled and you may start to see them in a new light. Their foibles and misgivings may become increasingly visible. Even glaring. You may even identify habits which lead you to believe that they’re not taking care of themselves as well as they should. For instance…

They almost always have their face in a screen

Whether they’re immersed in a movie or a video game on the TV, scrolling through their social feeds or whiling away the hours on Netflix, if your partner reveals themselves to be a screen junkie, this can cause problems in the relationship. Their phone, tablet or TV can create a barrier to effective communication and make you feel very unimportant to them. Furthermore, all that blue light can wreak havoc with their sleeping patterns, which brings us to...

They seem never to sleep

If your significant other still has their face in a screen when you nod off and wakes up groggily and resentfully with you, they likely aren’t getting nearly enough sleep. A good night’s sleep is not only vital for good overall health, not getting enough of it can lead to brain fog, lack of clear communication and a loss of libido. Hardly conducive to a healthy relationship!

Communicating with them is a nightmare

Communication is the bedrock of any healthy relationship. But if you always have trouble communicating with your partner, it may not be because they’re ignoring you or that they don’t value what they have to say. It may just mean that they have an undiagnosed issue with hearing loss. This article will help you to address the issue of a hearing aid with them. While it may take some getting used to, it can remove barriers to communication and make your relationship a lot healthier.

They never cook

If your SO’s refrigerator is full of ready meals (or, worse still, completely bare) they likely don’t do any cooking which means that their diet will be subpar. They simply won’t be getting the right combinations of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates and fats that a healthy body needs.

There are a lot of alcohol bottles in their recycling

Worse still, if their refrigerator or recycling are full of beer and wine bottles, their drinking may be beyond the realms of the recreational and threaten to become a problem later. Regular alcohol consumption can also cause a loss of libido, wreak havoc with overall health and lead to erratic behavior that could cause problems down the line.

How to address the issue

If you notice any of these issues, you can’t afford to bury your head in the sand. But you don’t want to push them away by nagging them either. Let them know what they are doing to themselves and what they could be doing to your relationship. Encourage them to take an active interest in their health not just for the relationship but for themselves. Let them know that you are on their side and happy to support them. But also that they may lose you if they don’t make a real effort to look after themselves.
