Book Nerd Reviews: Black Moon by Kenneth Calhoun

Black Moon is the debut novel of author Kenneth Calhoun. The story follows a few main characters as they struggle to survive in an apocalyptic type world brought on by a worldwide outbreak of severe insomnia. People just cannot sleep no matter what. The characters all struggle with the fact that they are still able to sleep, but those around them cannot and it becomes dangerous as the lack of sleep has brought violence to those who don't suffer from the insomnia. The world has become one of mass confusion and desperation as people look for a cure that will just let them sleep like normal again.

As someone who suffers from insomnia and has went 5 days without sleep before (which was actually a manic state and not so much insomnia), I can tell you how horrifyingly real the idea of this story seems. However, I just wasn't digging the story. It's really not that it's a bad book by any means, I just could not get into it. I can't really pin point what I particularly didn't like about it. It's wonderfully written with a great build up and characters you really feel like you can associate with or feel for, but I just feel like it didn't give me the thrill that I thought it would. These types of books are very popular right now. By "these types" I mean the ones where the setting is anything but a place you would want to live in. There was a bit of confusion at the end for me where I thought that there was a piece of the story missing for one character, but maybe that's to leave room for a sequel someday? Who knows.
