Below you’ll find some dos and don’ts of starting your own fitness regime so you can make sure it lasts:
DO Define Your Goals
If you’re going to start a fitness regime that you actually want to stick to, then you’re going to want to define your goals. If you don’t define your goals, you won’t know the type of workouts you need to do, how often you need to do them, and what to eat to support your goals! Defining them before you begin is absolutely key. So, for instance, do you want to get leaner? Maybe you want to build muscle? Both will require different approaches. You can’t just head to the gym and do whatever. It won’t really do anything for your goals and can be disheartening when you don’t see any results whatsoever.
DON’T Try To Do Everything At Once
Trying to overhaul your lifestyle all at once can be overwhelming and make you want to give up. Just change one small thing at a time and build yourself up, so that you’re actually getting into a routine and building habits, and not stressing yourself out.
DO Track Your Progress
Tracking your progress is essential. It’ll keep the momentum up and you’ll see how well you’re doing. Your fitness center may even track some of your progress for you if you enquire with them. They could take your measurements, weight, and body fat percentage for instance. However, these aren't the only ways to track progress. You should also be paying attention to how much fitter and stronger you feel, your confidence, how your clothes fit, etc.
DON’T Compare Yourself To Anybody Else
Comparing yourself to other people is a bad idea. Your journey is always going to be completely different to somebody else’s journey, so comparing your results to theirs will only derail you in the long run. Make sure the only person you pay attention to is yourself.
DO Challenge Yourself
You should make sure you’re challenging yourself in the gym. Can you run faster? Lift heavier? Improve your form? You shouldn’t be killing yourself off all the time, but you should be trying new things to improve your overall skills and fitness.
DON’T Make It An Unsustainable Routine
Your routine needs to be sustainable. Working out 3 times each week is much better than working out 7 days a week and then not going at all for the next week. You can’t stress yourself out by trying to do too much, so be smart and make sure you only bite off what you can chew.
